Almeria

The province of Almeria is situated in the south east of the Spanish peninsula and borders with the provinces of Granada and Murcia.

Inland, Almeria has an almost lunar landscape of desert, sandstone and dried up river beds and has long been a popular choice for filming American style spaghetti westerns. (The all time Peter O'Toole classic, Lawrence of Arabia was also shot here). You can visit Little Hollywood or Yucca City, just outside Tabernas which was the set of "A Fistful of Dollars" and various other films and is open daily to visitors. However, this forms a backdrop to some particularly attractive coves and beaches much of which is protected by the Cabo de Gata National park. Almerimar close to the city of Almeria boasts one of the largest marinas on the coast with facilities for over 1000 berths and provides all the necessary facilities for the discerning sailor.

The province is the hottest in Andalucia with an historical average of more than 3,100 hours of annual sunshine. The natural protection of the mountain range of the Sierra de Gabor also has resulted in the Almeria province being one of the most productive agricultural zones in Europe.

Mojacar is an ancient Moorish village at the foothills of the Sierra Cabrera with the twisting cobbled streets, old arches and domed houses stacked one above the other and overlook the sea. To the North of Mojacar is the attractive town of Garrucha with its fishing port and Friday market. Inland places definitely worth visiting include, Sorbas, Bedar, Lubrin (a quite exciting drive) and Tabernas. The roads are quiet in comparison to the other Costas and there are three natural wildlife parks in the area. As in other areas of Spain there are a number of good golf courses.

The province of Almeria is now one of fastest growing areas in the country. No property crash or slumps here! Historically an area of great agricultural resources, the emphasis is now on tourism, with natural parks such as Cabo de Gata and the endless stretches of virgin beaches bathed by the Mediterranean sea, it has been the obvious choice with Spanish holiday makers for years. The airport at Almeria city takes flights from most UK International and some regional airports.
